HP 219A or 219X: which one makes more sense?

Both capacities fit the same supported printers, but their purchase price and yield differ sharply. We compare current prices and cost per page to show when 219X earns back its higher upfront cost.

Content updated:

HP 219A and HP 219X are two capacity classes in the same regional toner family. The useful comparison has two parts: price divided by stated yield for cost per page, and whole cartridges required for your annual cash spend.

Can you mix 219A and 219X?

Yes. Capacity is selected per colour, so you can use 219X black with 219A colour cartridges. This can suit a print mix that consumes black more quickly.

When 219A can be the better fit

Choose it when a lower purchase amount matters or a slowly used colour would remain installed for a long time. Confirm with the current prices and annual calculator.

When 219X can be the better fit

Choose it when fewer replacements matter. Its higher yield does not guarantee the lowest spend: the current price and your whole-cartridge requirement decide that.

What about multipacks?

If several colours need replacing together, compare the 219A multipack with the 219X multipack and separate cartridges.

How to make the decision

  1. Confirm the exact regional OEM-code family in your printer documentation or on the cartridge being replaced.
  2. Compare current A and X prices against their own HP-stated yields.
  3. Check whole-cartridge annual spend, not only a fractional cost estimate.
  4. If considering compatible toner, compare that exact product with its own seller-stated yield and evidence.

Questions about HP 219A and 219X

What is the difference between HP 219A and HP 219X?

A identifies HP's standard-yield capacity and X its high-yield capacity. HP states approximately 1,300 versus 3,200 pages for black and 1,200 versus 2,500 pages for each colour, using ISO/IEC 19798 with continuous printing.

Is there a monthly page count at which 219X becomes cheaper?

No fixed page count determines cost per page. That comparison is current price divided by stated yield. Monthly volume instead changes how many whole cartridges you buy, total annual spend and replacement frequency.

Should I choose lower upfront cost or fewer replacements?

Use both views. Compare cost per page for long-run efficiency, then use the annual calculator to see the number of whole cartridges and total spend for your actual print volume.
