Troubleshooting

Solve HP 219 toner problems step by step

Start with the checks that can't damage anything, then decide whether the cartridge, the chip or the firmware is the likely cause.

Content updated:

Narrow down the cause first

  • Does the problem affect one colour or several?
  • What is the exact W-code and full printer model?
  • Did it begin after a cartridge change or firmware update?
  • Is the cartridge original HP or one exact compatible product?

Cartridge not recognised

  1. Check W2190A–W2193X, the colour and the regional toner family.
  2. Remove the cartridge and all transport protection.
  3. Reseat it straight and fully; briefly power the printer off completely.
  4. Check contacts and visible damage without touching the imaging drum.
  5. If available, test a cartridge that previously worked and record the result.

Compatible toner does not work

Check the exact listing, chip statement, OEM equivalent and returns terms. “Chip included” is a seller claim, not an independent guarantee. Contact the seller with model, firmware, cartridge code and message.

Problem after a firmware update

An update can affect chip checking, but it is not the only possible cause. Check installation, code and contacts first. Do not attempt undocumented downgrades; use HP support for original supplies and the product seller for compatible toner.

Transfer a chip only when the exact product documents it

Do not transfer a chip solely because a general video or similar cartridge suggests it. Only the seller's complete instructions for that exact product let you assess the process and risks.

  • Print a diagnostic page and identify the affected colour.
  • Check print mode, paper type and whether the cartridge is seated.
  • Do not touch or clean the imaging drum unless the manufacturer instructs it.
  • This is toner: printhead cleaning and ink drying are not suitable explanations.

One colour is missing

Check the colour slot and W-code first. Whether the fault follows a cartridge or remains with the same slot is useful information for the retailer or HP support, without diagnosing hardware yourself.

Document error messages

Photograph the message and supply-status page, and record time, model and firmware. Avoid generic internet service codes or repeated factory resets before basic product matching is checked.

Toner level looks wrong

The displayed level is an estimate. Compatible chips can report differently from original HP. Use print quality and messages as extra evidence; an unusual level proves neither empty toner nor blocking.

Replace or claim for a cartridge

Keep packaging and receipt until the cartridge is proven. Contact the retailer or HP for a faulty original, and the exact product's seller for a compatible. 219toner.com does not sell cartridges or diagnose hardware remotely.

After diagnosis: compare replacements

If replacement is genuinely needed, this comparison shows original and compatible W2190X options from the same current data layer. Compatible yield comes from that product's record, not HP's figure.

Return an empty cartridge

Use the manufacturer or seller take-back route, or an appropriate local collection. A third-party cartridge does not automatically use the original HP return route.

Troubleshooting questions

Should I buy new toner immediately when it is not recognised?

Not immediately. First check code, region, transport protection, installation, contacts and the exact message.

Does printhead cleaning help with HP 219 toner?

No. HP 219 is laser toner and does not use an inkjet printhead. Follow maintenance steps for the exact laser printer.

Who handles a faulty compatible cartridge?

Contact the seller of the exact compatible product; its returns and warranty terms apply.
